NUKEM Awarded Further Contract for the PBMR Fuel Plant in South Africa
- Fourth contract between NUKEM and PBMR since 2000
- NUKEM provides professional services for the procurement support and supervision of construction and commissioning activities for the PBMR Fuel Plant
On July 28, representatives of NUKEM Technologies GmbH and Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (Pty.) Ltd. (PBMR) signed a contract for the provision of professional services for the procurement support and supervision of construction and commissioning activities for the Fuel Plant for the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor project in South Africa.
This fourth contract between NUKEM and PBMR proves the excellent cooperation between both companies. Since the year 2000, NUKEM is deeply involved in the design of the Fuel Plant for the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor project in South Africa. NUKEM has been responsible for the Basic and Detail Engineering for three of four main production processes as well as for two processes for the recycling of effluents and uranium resulting from scrap material. The fuel production takes place according to the former NUKEM/HOBEG fuel production processes for the German HTR Projects (AVR and THTR).
The PBMR Fuel Plant will be located at the Nuclear Site Pelindaba, about 50 km Northwest of Pretoria. It will be built in order to qualify the fuel manufacturing process and to deliver the first core load for the reference Modular Reactor. The design of the fuel elements is based on the German HTR-Fuel design of molded graphite spheres containing coated fuel particles, consisting of Uranium Dioxide.
