NUKEM Purchases AEA-T's Nuclear Engineering Activity


The technical services provider TESSAG strengthens its worldwide market position in the nuclear services business field
Risley/Alzenau, June, 4th 2001 - The British NUKEM Nuclear Ltd, a subsidiary of German based NUKEM Nuklear GmbH (a TESSAG, Technical Systems and Services AG, Frankfurt, company) today announced that it has exchanged contracts with AEA-Technology plc to purchase the assets and business of its Nuclear Engineering activity. The contracts are subject to final approvals by the UK nuclear regulator and the ultimate transfer of staff is expected later in the summer.

The acquisition of AEA-Technology's Nuclear Engineering activities will result in an annual turnover in excess of £50 million. The combined UK Company, which will continue to trade under NUKEM's name, will be well placed to serve the needs of its major customers as the Government's nuclear liabilities clean-up programmes, particularly at Dounreay, Sellafield and the first-generation Magnox power stations, continue to gain momentum. The business comprises some 600 permanent staff located on sites at Harwell, Dounreay, Winfrith, Windscale and Risley. This high quality professional team provides nuclear solutions in decommissioning, waste management, engineering design, land remediation and health physics as well as a full range of associated activities. The principal clients are UKAEA, BNFL, MOD and British Energy but increasing levels of business have been achieved in the USA, Canada (through its CTECH joint venture), the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
