Regulatory approval for the VAK Service Center
- Preservation of jobs after dismantling of the former reactor
VAK GmbH has received approval from the Bavarian State Office of Environmental Protection pursuant to Art. 7 of the Radiation Safety Directive for the construction of a service center for the testing and decontamination of low-level solid radioactive waste. With the service center, RWE NUKEM plans to make use of the existing know-how and technical facilities available in Kahl even after completion of the decommissioning and dismantling process. This will ensure that approximately 30 jobs at the site will be preserved. In 2001 RWE NUKEM GmbH assumed responsibility for the decommissioning and dismantling of the VAK as general and management contractor. The decommissioning process is scheduled for completion by the end of 2006. The planned service centre will be able to process approximately 500 tonnes of low-level radioactive materials from all of the German nuclear power plants.
