RWE NUKEM delivers waste treatment centre to Russian nuclear power plant
- Treatment center for radioactive waste at the Balakovo Nuclear Power Plant
- RWE NUKEM affirms its role as a successful nuclear services provider in the countries of the former Soviet Union.
RWE NUKEM GmbH of Alzenau, a subsidiary of RWE Solutions AG of Frankfurt am Main, has installed a turnkey treatment and conditioning center for the processing of operational radioactive waste at the Russian Balakovo Nuclear Power Plant. This achievement further strengthens RWE NUKEM's market position in the countries of the former Soviet Union.
The waste treatment center comprises five component systems: sorting, incineration, compacting, cementing and internal transport facilities for automatic conveyance of material between processing systems. The conditioning and conversion of radioactive waste into a form suitable for safe storage will have a substantial positive impact on the local environment.
The Balakovo Nuclear Power Plant is located on the banks of the Volga approximately 800 km south-west of Moscow. Four WWER-1000 pressurized water reactors are currently in operation at the plant. A fifth reactor is under construction.
RWE NUKEM began work on the waste treatment center project in 1994. Due to the financial crisis in Russia, work was discontinued for several years before being resumed in mid-2000. The waste treatment center has now been turned over to the client and will begin "hot" operations in the near future. The successful completion of this project in spite of the problems encountered serves as an excellent example of Russo-German co-operation.
