UKAEA appoints consortium to dismant Windscale Pile One
NUKEM has been awarded a major contract by UKAEA, the British Government nuclear agency. NUKEM Nuklear GmbH is one of three members of a consortium that also includes British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL) and Rolls Royce Nuclear Engineering Services. The consortium will remotely dismantle and remove for treatment and storage the core of the Windscale Pile One graphite reactor. The reactor was constructed between 1946 and 1950 and operated until 1957 when it was shut down following a core fire. Within the consortium, NUKEM will be responsible for the design, commissioning, and operation of a treatment facility of all waste. The processing of waste includes assaying, segregation, size reduction, passivation of damaged fuel, annealing of graphite, packaging and, where appropriate, grouting. NUKEM Nuklear will be supported by its British and German subsidiaries NUKEM Nuclear Ltd. and DETEC. The value of the 8-year contract is nearly 54 million pounds.
