Belt Conveyer Free Release Measurement System for Radiological Characterization of Soil and Stones at Angarsk

30 November -0001

Contract

NUKEM has been awarded a contract by Angarsk Electro-Chemical Combine (AECC) to supply a belt conveyor free release measurement system for radiological characterization of soil and stones.

Description

Nuclear fuel has been manufactured at the Angarsk site since 1954. As part of soil remediation at the site, soil must be checked for contamination. For this, it is first crushed in portions to provide a homogeneous and controllable material flow. The bulk material can then be radiologically measured and characterized. The characterization is based on the re-sults of MCNP calculations, gamma spectrometry, and weight and volume determination. According to the measured spe-cific activity of a uranium nuclide vector, the soil is either prepared for free release or, if contaminated, filled into suit-able containers. This process enables an efficient remediation of the potentially contaminated soil.
